Along the fabled road, deep in the Pine Barrens stands this tall metal framework that is a fire tower. I like to think of it as the Pinelands version of the Eiffel Tower but much more useful. Sometimes I see it in my dreams as a living metal giant, a guardian, it’s stance wide and purposeful, always watchful and protective of the delicate ecosystem of the Pine Barrens. My fear of heights aside, I have often wondered about the view from up there. Sometimes there’s Park Ranger’s truck parked on the side and I have even seen a female ranger, young and petite, driving off in the truck. I wonder if she realizes how important her job is?
